A HOLISTIC, MOE-ALIGNED PRESCHOOL CURRICULUM AT HESS SINGAPORE
Designed for children aged 18 months to 6 years, our preschool curriculum goes beyond rote learning. We take a thematic, hands-on approach where children are active participants in their own learning journey— while also building readiness for primary school.
As a holistic preschool in Singapore, we harmonise global best practices with the local MOE-aligned curriculum, ensuring every lesson connects to real-world applications. Our programme is rooted in the NEL Framework, teaching children essential skills through modern, relevant contexts, where traditional subjects come alive through practical, meaningful experiences.
By blending independent thinking with these strong academic foundations, we ensure children gain the knowledge and habits needed for primary school success.
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
When a child asks, “Why do apples turn brown?” or “Where do bubbles go when they pop?”, that’s where discovery begins.
Our project-based approach turns these curiosities into meaningful investigations. As part of our preschool curriculum, children observe, document what they notice, measure, test ideas, and collaborate with their friends.
Each project blends science, literacy, maths, and art in natural, purposeful ways. Through these experiences, children build real-world skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and confident communication, forming an essential foundation.
Language & Literacy
We nurture children’s communication abilities in both English and Chinese. Our systemic approach involves helping them become confident speakers, eager readers, and emerging writers through systematic phonics and vocabulary-building activities such as our Picture Talk and Monthly Show & Tell activities. This equips them with the necessary tools to express their ideas and explore diverse perspectives.
Social-Emotional Development
Through group activities, storytelling, and role-play, children discover their own strengths while learning to understand others. They practise emotional regulation, build friendships, and learn why kindness is an important part of daily life.
Our curriculum also incorporates lessons that teach empathy, the importance of taking turns, and shared responsibilities of the classroom. Children learn to resolve conflicts respectfully and recognise how their actions affect the people around them. We foster social-emotional development and positive behaviour by embedding practices for reflection, encouragement, and celebrating kindness directly into our curriculum themes and book sharing sessions, nurturing thoughtful, caring members of the community.
Physical Development
Our programme develops both gross and fine motor skills through age-appropriate activities. Children build balance, coordination, and strength during outdoor play, while arts and crafts, puzzles, and writing tasks refine their fine motor precision. We also foster healthy habits by promoting active play and teaching the basics of nutrition.
In addition to active play in the indoor playground, children enjoy music and movement, sensory experiences, and simple physical challenges. These intentional experiences within our preschool education curriculum help children grow confident in how they move, explore, and interact with the world around them.
Cognitive Development
Children build cognitive skills through hands-on projects that spark curiosity and critical thinking. Mini-experiments, design projects, and open-ended challenges teach them to connect ideas and solve problems creatively.
We also prioritise getting a head start on STEM education in preschool. Through discovery-of-the-world activities and guided investigations, children learn to ask thoughtful questions and reason logically. These opportunities to experiment, predict, observe, and reflect are an essential part of our curriculum, helping children understand how things work and why ideas matter.
Mathematics
We help children discover mathematics through hands-on learning and thoughtful guidance. Using the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, we start with real objects children can touch and count, then move to pictures, and finally introduce abstract numbers when they are ready.
This systematic method builds the strong mathematical foundation children need for academic success. Through real-world application, children explore early addition and subtraction, recognise patterns, and make sense of mathematical ideas in meaningful ways.
Aesthetics & Creative Expression
We nurture creativity through music, art, drama, dance, and sensory play. Whether they’re painting a story, building with blocks, or making music together, each child discovers their own special way to share their ideas.
Through these joyful experiences, children learn to express emotions, try new approaches, and appreciate different art forms. From visual arts to movement, these experiences strengthen communication skills and spark imagination.
